Peter Soriano / Dominik Stauch ‹Color Impermanence›

In the double exhibition ‹Color Impermanence› the two artists Peter Soriano (*1959) from the USA and Dominik Stauch (*1962) from Switzerland show their latest works.

With paintings within two series, ‹Outside the Plains› and ‹State of Mind›, Dominik Stauch has been pursuing his painting in recent years: subtle assemblages of geometric color surfaces that sometimes evoke individual moods, sometimes a state of mind or entire color spaces; sometimes «outside» familiar areas or «fields» – outside the plains. He has also created a new sculpture with his well-tried holes to look through, and presents collages arranged in a block as a total work of art, anyhow each tells a story in its own right.

Peter Soriano shows in his second exhibition at our gallery the third part of his ‘Snowmelt series›. This time he turns his attention not to piles of snow, but to snowballs. Some of the ink drawings had to be done quickly before the snow melted. Peter Soriano essentially helps the snowballs to their actual form through fine line hatching, with a few additional contours and color accents. In some of the drawings, the handprints of the artist himself are clearly visible: through the instinctive choice of color, but also by emphasizing the differences in temperature by means of different coloring.

«The impermanence of color» alluded to in the title may show itself more indirectly than directly in the paintings: as a changing appearance depending on the color and light conditions, on the angle of view and perception. Or in the change of day and seasons and not least through climate change. Peter Soriano also explores the latter with his most recent drawings of snowballs, as in the long-standing project ‹Snowmelt/Schnewasser›. While Dominik Stauch continues his explorations in the «field» of extended painting: with subtle compositions in the juxtaposition and superimposition of colors and forms.

Just as we are constantly set in motion with our gazes in front of the paintings and in the exhibition, the colors of the paintings may experience their own  permanence in the impermanent, the dynamic.
