Christian Denzler ‹BACK TO THE ROOTS›

Christian Denzler, who was born in 1966, lives and works in Bern and Brussels. He draws, paints and creates installations and objects, but ever so often he also writes poems, prose and texts accompanying the works of artist friends.

The body is the theme that threads its way through all his works. Until now the lines were so fine and the transitions from light to dark so subtle that one could never be sure whether the figures was in the process of appearing or disappearing. It was exactly this hard-to-define, elusive realm, this balance between condensing and dissolution what interested the artist.

In the current exhibition, Christian Denzler has returned to his beginnings, as the title says, ‘Back to the Roots’. A large number of new drawings have emerged, but this time the pencil line is much more expressive, dark and strong in the line. The characters don’t disappear at all, but are more present than ever and with their intense expression they seem to want to tell us something.

We already know some motifs from the artist’s repertoire, such as the children’s or friends’ portraits. A self-portrait by Christian Denzler is new. He is also interested in the animal world, such as the marmot or the raven. Very classic motifs from art history such as the Memento Mori or the Pietà have emerged, as well as very peculiar creatures such as the Creature.

Regardless of the motif, the new drawings by Christian Denzler once again manage to trigger a great deal of emotion in the viewer, and the exhibition ‘Back to the Roots’ owes a unique visitor experience to the artist’s perfectionism.
